“Mikhail Pirogov’s rich, warm tenor brings just as much soul to the most crowded and expressive scenes as to the most tender and intimate lyrical moments…
Mikhail Pirogov, originally from the Republic of Buryatia, studied at the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory in the class of Yury Marusin, the People’s Artist of Russia. In 2010 he was accepted into the opera company of the Buryat Opera and Ballet Theatre.
In 2011, Mikhail Pirogov became a soloist at the Saratov Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, and in 2014 he returned to Buryatia. In 2018 he joined the company of the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, and since 2021 he has been performing as the leading soloist of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre (NOVAT).
Mikhail Pirogov made his Bolshoi Theatre debut in 2022. The same year, he received the highest national theatre award, the Golden Mask, in the category for Best Male Opera Singer for his rendition of Solovey Budimirovich in The Bogatyrs by Alexander Borodin (produced by the Hvorostovsky Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre).
Between 2023 and 2026, Mikhail Pirogov was a soloist at the Mikhailovsky Theatre, and, in 2026, he joined the opera company of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia. He is currently a guest soloist at the Mikhailovsky and Mariinsky Theatres in St. Petersburg, as well as the Kolobov Moscow Novaya Opera Theatre.
Needless to say, Mikhail Pirogov has received his fair share of recognition here in Belarus, too.
“Mikhail Pirogov does not stand in one place, he is in a state of perpetual motion, constantly developing and improving both his technical and artistic professional skills. In the Minsk production, his Herman is one that is believable by Stanislavsky’s standards, not only as a musician and singer, but as an artist, who is allowing the viewer to take a look inside his vast inner world, sharing his emotions, his intelligence, and his psychologically subjective interpretation of this great operatic archetype, if you will, wrote Belcanto.ru correspondent Igor Korabin when Mikhail Pirogov performed the part of Herman in the Boloshoi Theatre of Belarus production of Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades back in October of 2023.
“The way I see him, Herman is a desperate man who is completely out of control. He has a deadly desire to win at any cost, and this is a desire he is completely powerless against; it’s his greatest weakness… says Pirogov himself.
The cast of the November 19th performance will also feature the People’s Artists of Belarus Anastasia Moskvina and Stanislav Trifonov, the Honoured Artist of the Republic Belarus Aksana Yakushevich, as well as the internationally acclaimed Andrei Logvinov, Ekaterina Mikhnovets, Alexander Gelakh, Andrey Selutin, Victor Mendelev, Ruslan Maspanov, Marina Moroz, Olga Malinouskaya, Ilya Berdnikov and Klavdiya Potemkina.
The People's Artist of the Republic of Bashkortostan Artem Makarov will conduct.
